Students at the Peacock Academy receive the utmost support and care. Their learning experience is supported by a team of five mentors from an innovative Peer Mentoring and Befriending Programme. Set up in 2010 it has become a powerful part of the Academy’s ethos: promoting successful students who are role models and demonstrate leadership ability to become Peer Mentors. Being of similar age and having graduated from the programme: offers our Mentors a unique position to reach out and support hard-to-reach young people with a solution focused approach focusing upon young people’s strengths and what they do well, rather than negative behaviour. The current mentoring team, order of 3 girls and 2 boys, includes; an England female boxer, a trainee beautician and a lead mentor, who at 17, was short-listed for a 2012 national mentoring award. Peer Mentors actively support classroom learning, whilst crucially aiding the advancement of student’s social development. Peer Mentors sit on the Academy Council directing day-to-day management, taking the register and following up on absences, essential informal mentoring, conducting formal mentoring through the Peacock Passport Education Plan, helping facilitate a PHSCE programme, and managing a weekly sports programme. Our Peer mentors work tirelessly, often out-of-hours and have contributed significantly to preventing students becoming NEETS; perpetrators or victims of crime.
