Basic Construction Skills Course, Canning Town
A City & Guilds Level 1 course the Academy has run in its own woodshop.
Students learned practical building skills in a space set up like a carpentry workshop, then used them on real repairs around the Academy.

What Students Learned
Students covered hands-on skills including:
- Laying flooring
- Constructing a panelled door
- Patching plastered walls
- Making casement windows
Learning on the Job
Students developed the skills to build interior fixtures such as door frames and skirting boards, then used them to make repairs around the Academy. The woodshop was set up to feel like a real carpentry workshop.
There were also opportunities for visits and work experience at a carpentry warehouse.
Where It Could Lead
The Level 1 qualifications are an ideal step towards a more advanced course or an apprenticeship, leading to a career in construction – as a builder, plumber, painter or almost any other construction trade.
